It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Terry Wayne Varney on May 21, 2026 in Wakefield, QC, after a long struggle with cancer. Born November 16,1939 in Windsor Mills QC, eldest son of the late Kenneth and Iris Varney. Terry grew up riding and loving horses with his younger brother Alan and sister Nela. He went on to attend the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montreal in St. Hyacinthe, QC, where he met and married the other love of his life, Muriel M. Belanger (1938-2017).
Upon graduation in January 1964, Terry moved to Aylmer, QC, where he was one of only four veterinarians practicing large animal medicine and surgery in the whole Ottawa Valley at that time. Terry left practice briefly in 1966 to recover from a rabid cat bite, then he returned to the University of Montreal to teach equine medicine and surgery. In 1968, Terry returned to practice in Aylmer, where he dedicated 54 years of his life caring for the animals of his community. When not working or watching his kids play sports, Terry could be found at a horse or dog show with Muriel, or out on the water fishing. Throughout his long and exciting career, Terry cared for thousands of animals and their families, and generously shared his time, knowledge, and experience with any colleague in need.
He is survived by his sister Nela, three sons Jonathan, Gregory (Jane), and Justin (Julia), grandchildren Jacob (Yu), Vivienne, Charlotte, Graeme, and Katherine, and great-grandson Yoen.
According to Terry’s wishes, there will be no memorial service.
His family would like to thank all the amazing caregivers who did so much for Terry during his final years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the charity of your choice in Terry’s memory.
