In memory of

Walter Lyons

1950 - 2026

Walter Lyons, age 75, of Ste-Cécile-de-Masham, Quebec, died suddenly of a heart attack on April 23, 2026. Born in Valleyfield, Quebec, he was the son of the late Clothilde Boulay and the late Lloyd Lyons.

From a young age, Walter was skilled at escaping parental supervision and was often found exploring the neighbourhood. These early adventures foreshadowed what was to come — a life filled with journeys, curiosity, and discovery.

After completing his early education in Valleyfield, he attended Cégep Édouard-Montpetit in Longueuil, where he was introduced to fencing — a sport in which he excelled. While attending Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, he competed nationally at the highest level.

His passion for fencing led him to work for the Fédération dEscrime du Québec and later for Canadian Heritage. These roles led to his first experience as an official at the 1976 Summer Olympics and, over time, to supporting Canadas participation in Jeux de la Francophonie in Morocco and at multiple Olympic Games throughout his career.

Walter is survived by his sister Marlene (Jean-Robert Derome); his brothers Ken (Louise Poirier) and Michael (Yolande Leduc); his dear friend and partner Michelle Bertrand; his stepdaughter Marie-Hélène; his step-grandson Alix; and his extended Bertrand family: Benoit, Renée, Lili, Marie, and Marc.

Walter was an exceptional man of many talents. Blessed with an incredible memory, he cooked like a master chef and practised woodworking with the skill of a master cabinetmaker. Whatever he undertook, he pursued with care and excellence.

His love for family and friends was matched only by his love of life. His smile and laughter lit up every room. Among his greatest joys were the outdoors — biking, cross-country skiing, and hiking, particularly in the Gatineau Hills and the Alps, where he marvelled at the wildlife, flora, fungi, and changing seasons. He was always generous in sharing his knowledge, touching and influencing many lives.

In keeping with this spirit of generosity, Walter chose to donate his body to support the training of future doctors at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine.

Walter, you will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Walters life will be held at a later date.

This is such shocking news. Walter was a big part of The Wakefield Walkers hiking group. He was so full of knowledge about so many subjects and history that kept us all engaged and entertained. Our hearts go out to his family. Walter will be terribly missed but always remembered. Tam and Tom

I'm so sad to hear the news of Walter's death. Totally surprising as he was always in good shape and very active. I walked a couple of times with Wakefield Walkers and he was leading those hikes. I really knew him best when we were colleagues at Sport Canada some years ago. He'll be missed. Condolences to his family and friends.

Shocking news, I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS. WALTER WAS IN GREAT SHAPE AND ALWAYS SMILING WHILE HE LISTENED TO THE STORIES OF THE WAKEFIELD WALKERS. I WILL MISS HIS ENTHUSIASM FOR LIFE. MES CONDOLENCES A LA FAMILLE

I am so sad to hear of Walter’s passing. My condolences to his family. Walter and I shared many discussions at Sport Canada and I will always remember his intellect and thoughtfulness. Having lived in Trois Rivières we always shared a few stories. He always stopped at my desk to speak to me. A mutual respect.

My condolences to Walter's family and friends from an old co-worker at Sport Canada.

Pierre Fortin 55 ch Fortin,La Peche,Qc
