In memory of

Terry W. Varney

1939 - 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Terry Wayne Varney on May 21, 2026 in Wakefield, QC, after a long struggle with cancer.  Born November 16, 1939 in Windsor Mills QC, eldest son of the late Kenneth and Iris Varney. Terry grew up riding and loving horses with his younger brother Alan and sister Nela. He went on to attend the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montreal in St. Hyacinthe, QC, where he met and married the other love of his life, Muriel M. Belanger (1938-2017).

Upon graduation in January 1964, Terry moved to Aylmer, QC, where he was one of only four veterinarians practicing large animal medicine and surgery in the whole Ottawa Valley at that time.  Terry left practice briefly in 1966 to recover from a rabid cat bite, then he returned to the University of Montreal to teach equine medicine and surgery.  In 1968, Terry returned to practice in Aylmer, where he dedicated 54 years of his life caring for the animals of his community.  When not working or watching his kids play sports, Terry could be found at a horse or dog show with Muriel, or out on the water fishing. Throughout his long and exciting career, Terry cared for thousands of animals and their families, and generously shared his time, knowledge, and experience with any colleague in need.

He is survived by his sister Nela, three sons Jonathan, Gregory (Jane), and Justin (Julia), grandchildren Jacob (Yu), Vivienne, Charlotte, Graeme, and Katherine, and great-grandson Yoen.

According to Terry’s wishes, there will be no memorial service.

His family would like to thank all the amazing caregivers who did so much for Terry during his final years.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the charity of your choice in Terry’s memory.

I was so saddened to hear about the loss of your father. There are no words that can truly ease the pain of losing someone so important, but I want you to know that I am thinking of you and your family during this difficult time. Your father was very much loved in the community, and his dedication, compassion, and care touched the lives of many people and animals. He will be remembered not only for his professional contributions but also for the kindness and care he showed each and every day. May the memories you shared with your dad bring you comfort in the days ahead, and may you find strength in the love of those around you. His impact on your life will always remain a part of you. Dr. Varney was a dedicated and wonderful doctor to our many cats and dogs over many years. I once joked that when he built an addition to the offices that there should be a plaque that we contributed to that addition. Dr. Varney once spent nearly the whole day (a Saturday that the office was closed) to administer a blood transfusion to our dog. He will be missed by many.

Dr. Terry Varney played a vital role in the early days of the Aylmer SPCA, working alongside my mother, Terry Cavanagh, who founded the organization in 1977. His knowledge, dedication, and unwavering support helped lay the foundation for the care and protection of animals in our community. Beyond his professional contributions, Dr. Varney was known for his kindness and generosity toward his clients and their pets. He touched the lives of many and became a respected and beloved figure in Aylmer. His legacy lives on in the community he helped shape and the countless animals he helped care for and he will be missed.

My parents took all our childhood dogs to dr. Varney. When I was growing up I wanted to be a vet too so dr. Varney would often allow me to "assist" with certain simple procedures, always explaining to me what he was doing and what would come next. He was so kind and patient. I never have forgotten him, he will be missed.

My sincerest condolences to Dr. Varney’s family. I first met Terry when I had my first puppy in the early 90’s. He was also a customer of mine at my place of business and each time he would bring his vehicle in for service, I had the pleasure of chatting with him. He would always ask how my cats were doing. Every so often he would bring in his dogs when he dropped in for service. He was a wonderful man and he will be deeply missed. Hugs to the family.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Varney. This is truly a tremendous loss for the entire community. Growing up, I remember visiting his office with our family pets and always feeling reassured that they were in the very best hands. His compassion, dedication, and genuine care left a lasting impression on me even as a child. As an adult with pets of my own, I never once hesitated to trust them to Doc Varney. He was more than a veterinarian—he was a constant, a source of comfort, and someone who treated every animal like his own. Old Doc Varney will be deeply and sadly missed, but his impact will continue to be felt in the countless lives—both human and animal—that he touched. My heartfelt condolences to the Varney family during this difficult time.

My condolences to his family and friends. We had the immense pleasure of having Dr. Varney care for our first dog Bane. He was a wild Golden Doodle and Dr. Varney was so calm and patient that Bane would be under a trance with him. He is the standard by which we have judged every other vet that has taken care of our dogs over the years. He must have many, many companions waiting for him.

Dr Varney was my vet from 1980s (and we still go to the clinic) for numerous animals. 3 siamese cats and Jack Russell Terry mom and her pups. He saved my dogs life when she had a calcium deficieny from nursing 6 puppies. He was the nicest man and vet. He had a horse that lived for 34 years he told me! Yup he loved horses. Sorry he was sick at the end. Condolences to all the family

- Valerie Brown, on June 3, 2026

My first visit to Dr. Varney was in the late 60’s when my teen age sister- in-law and I brought in a weak little Kitten who had somehow shown up on my mother- in-law’s doorstep with a runny nose and eyes. He gently examined him gave him an antibiotic and told us that he had pneumonia and might not survive…so to take him home and be kind to him…when it came time to pay for his treatment Dr. Varney refused to charge us..instead complimenting us on our kindness to a stray animal..Tinker did survive and went on to live a happy life as did all our animals under Dr Varney’s care over the following years…a warm hearted caring man who will be missed…may he rest in peace

Although we live on different sides of the Atlantic Ocean we became very good friends with Terry more than 25 years ago. Initially being introduced to him through his longstanding vetinary care for pet dogs and cats of Canadian based family and then building an enduring friendship through a shared love of fishing. Meeting up on annual visits to Ottawa was always a delight whether on water or dry land. To us, Terry represented the very best of Canada - he was modest, kind, generous of spirit and always amused us with his wry sense of humour, even through his difficult final years. It was an enormous pleasure to know Terry and an honour to be considered his friends. We will miss him greatly. Goodbye dear friend. Ian and Sue

Our sincerest sympathies to the Varney family. We were recommended Dr Varney when we moved to Chelsea close to 40 years ago, and we have continued at Aylmer Veterinary Clinic since, due to him. Dr Varney (or as he was known in our family “Dr Barney”) showed true delight and care in our dogs. He would even waive the fee for a small issue, saying it was not worth the effort of payment. His delightful current staff maintain his high level of trust and care. We missed seeing him many years ago when he stopped working, and miss him even more now that he is gone. Rest in peace and know that you were very respected and loved.
