It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Niven Eddy Cundasawmy on 18 October, 2026, at the age of 84.

Dr. Cundasawmy leaves behind his daughter Anneke (John), his sister-in-law Mary (late Ramon), as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends, including his former spouse Geraldine Richardson.

Eddy was the son of the late Marcia Roboul and of the late Narainsamy (Noel) Cundasawmy. He was predeceased by his siblings, Ramon, Mavis, Peggy, and Erwin.

As a young boy in Mauritius, Eddy learned about Commonwealth landmarks and became fascinated by Niagara Falls, and so in 1966, when choosing between the scholarships offered to him, he naturally selected McMaster University for its proximity to a place he had been drawn to as a child. Earning a doctorate in chemistry, his contributions to science live on, through his postdoctoral research, and in his work as a world-leading specialist in petrochemical fire-retardant foams. Eddy will also be fondly remembered as a feminist, a great dancer, and an exceptional gardener.

The family wishes to thank the Foyer du Bonheur staff, especially Isabelle, as well as Janique Fontaine and Johanne Nolin for their extraordinary care and support.

In order to respect Eddy’s wishes, there will be no funeral. A celebration of life will be announced.

Online condolences may be made at www.cfo.coop.

RIP Eddy! Sylvain Parisien

RIP uncle Eddy. I was fortunate to have shared precious moments with him both in Canada and Mauritius and over the phone in later years. We had the same passion for research. He was the holder of several patents which is a significant achievement and I remember asking him to write his CV so I could present to the MSIRI director. I was shocked at how simple it was but what a weight it carried. I keep good memories of him and his ability to laugh and crack jokes especially about his school mates in Mauritius. His accent was such that within days of talking to him we would adopt. Will miss him heaps and he will remain forever is our memory.
