Jean Gauvreau was born in Ottawa on May 27, 1943, the son of the late Hector and the late Rose Gauvreau, née Tremblay. Sadly, he passed away on Christmas Day 2025, in Gatineau QC, leaving behind his much beloved partner of almost 40 years, Judith Davies.
After completing studies at Algonquin College, Jean started out as a graphic artist on Canada’s West Coast before settling in Gatineau. Over the years, he developed his talent as a post- impressionist painter, portraying his love of nature and the Outaouais region in oils and acrylics. His vividly-coloured canvases also reflected an abiding interest in the French and English cultures of the region. Jean's paintings and drawings can be found in private collections throughout Canada and internationally in such countries as Russia, France, Japan and the United States. His annual exhibition was an occasion not to be missed by his many admirers and collectors from Ottawa, Gatineau and beyond.
Jean continued to paint in his home studio and to teach classes locally until he became afflicted with Parkinson’s disease in his later years. Despite all, Jean never lost his sense of humour and his gentle nature. He will be dearly missed by his extended family and by his many wonderful friends, in Canada and abroad.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held in the Spring 2026.
In the meantime, donations in Jean’s name would be most welcomed by Parkinson Canada at https://www.parkinson.ca/get-involved/personal-giving/ or by Parkinson Québec at https://parkinsonquebec.ca/en/donate/in-memoriam-donation/
