STURDY, Mary Elizabeth
Mary Elizabeth Hingston
passed away Feb. 7, 2016, at age 92, after a brief stay at Papineau Hospital in Buckingham, Québec.
Mary is survived by her daughter Cathy, son-in-law Brent White, grandsons Nathan White and Chad Lamoureux, granddaughter-in-law Clarissa Andersen-White and great granddaughter Arabella White. She was predeceased by her husband Samuel, her daughter Judy (Lamoureux), parents Leslie and Martha (Tunley), brothers Charles and Edward and sister May (Stewart).
Born on Oct. 11, 1923, Mary grew up in Markham, Ont. She was a World War II veteran and longtime Legion member who lived in Buckingham, Que., more than 60 years. After her military career, she moved to the area to work at the Cyanamid plastics factory, where she operated the canteen. She also worked in the office of the federal Auditor General for more than 15 years.
A member of St. Stephens Anglican Church and several social groups and clubs, she was well-known in the community. Her volunteer work included countless hours at the Legion and church, and delivering Meals on Wheels until she was 85 years old.
A loyal friend, and beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she will be missed by longtime friends and newer acquaintances alike. The world has lost a mischievous grin, a great sense of humour and a caring heart. Mary was a person of infectious enthusiasm and incredible determination. She lived a good, long life, and her legacy will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know her.
Funeral services to be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Anglicans Church in Buckingham. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Stephens Church Renewal Fund or the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 54, are welcome.
