Lebel, Lionel

LEBEL, Lionel

1951 - 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lionel Lebel on July 29, 2020 at the age of 69. Loving, devoted father of Anne-Marie, Carolyn and Dany (Melissa). Caring, adored grandfather of Elise, Lili, Eric and Isaac (his little angels). He is predeceased by his treasured parents, Lionel Lebel Sr. and Adela Sophie Carbonneau. He also leaves in mourning eleven brothers and sisters : Bertrand (Lise), Jean-Marie (Jocelyne), Valmont, Yves (Annie), Bérengère, Ginette (Jacques), Jacques, Hélène (Benoit), Andrée, Michel (Francine) and Martin, as well as many relatives and friends.

Lionel was born in Pointe-Aux-Anglais, in the North Shore region of Quebec. He spent a part of his childhood here and in Sept-Iles, Quebec. He became a father at the young age of eighteen and work valiantly to provide for his family. He was employed for more than 30 years by Hydro-Quebec (Sept-Iles, Fermont, Port-Cartier, Outaouais) working as a lineman, a chief to linesmen teams, and later as a safety and security advisor. He was recognised for his excellence in all these roles. His expertise in the area of safety and security was particularly sought after during critical emergencies such as the 1998 ice storm in Quebec, and a great number of other events in Canada and the United States.

Lionel loved the great outdoors. He felt a great connection to nature and to the North Shore region of his childhood. It is also with a great sense of devotion that he cared for father’s hunting lodge on Lac Lebel as a young man. He erected here, together with his son Dany, a cross in his father, Lionel Lebel Sr.’s memory.

Lionel also had a great passion for woodworking. He spent countless hours in his workshop perfecting small sculptures which he dedicated lovingly to family and friends – intricate miniature landscapes, cottages, canoes and airplanes. He also had a great gift for writing beautiful prose and stories, and a passion for literature. He was well versed in ancient civilizations and astronomy. He loved music, cooking, and nothing was more important to Lionel than his family which he spoiled, cherished, and sometimes teased. His favorite times were spent with his grandchildren, playing, fishing or preparing his famous Cipaille, a traditional Quebecois dish.

A funeral service will be held at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Hull (Gatineau), QC on Saturday, August 22, 2020 10 a.m., and all those who wish to attend are welcome. Due to COVID, a reception will not be held. A second funeral will be held in Pointe-Aux-Anglais during the summer of 2021.

An homage in memory of Lionel written by his brother Martin Lebel, is available on the blog Au gré de mon humeur – Douze (http://augredemonhumeur.blogspot.com/2020/07/douze.html?m=1).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Condolences may be left in Lionel’s online guestbook at www.cfo.coop.

I know how hard it is to loose a father and grandfather, but now you have another angel to protect you.
The memories you built with him through the years will stay forever with you and will help in your sorrow.
May he rest in peace now and if something could help you now is to know that is suffering is over.
Be strong.
Love you.

I hope it comforts you to know that your grief is shared by all of us who knew your dad/grandpapa. He was a kind and gentle soul who always spoke from the heart and he will be sorely missed. To this day, each and every time we would get together he would always call me his « petite sœur » and tell me he loved me. I was about seven when we first met and I would sit on his knee when he was dating your mom/ grandma. I know he was so proud of you and loved you with his heart and soul and you reciprocated that love back to him in so many ways.
