SCHOENHAMMER, Ernst Paul

Fr. Ernst Schoenhammer, O.M.I. died on December 30th 2016 in Springhurst Residence of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, where he was a member and resided since June 2016. Fr. Ernst was born on May 16th 1938 in Bamberg, Germany, to Josef and Margareta (Zipfel) Schoenhammer , both deceased. He is survived by his sister, Miss Eugenie Schoenhammer, resident in Germany. He entered the Oblate novitiate in Maria Engelport on November 1st 1959, where he made his first profession a year later. Final vows as a member of the Oblate Congregation followed on November 1st 1963 in Hunfeld, where he was also ordained a priest on December 18th 1965, by Most Rev. Adolf Rolte, bishop of Fulda. His first obedience was to Ottawa, Canada, as Chaplain for the German-speaking immigrant Catholics, on September 9th 1966, and he became pastor of St. Albertus parish in 1977. He has been the beloved pastor of St. Albertus Parish until his death. He received the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany awarded on October 31st 2003, by the President Johannes Rau, for serving German-speaking immigrants since 1966. A wake service will be held at St. Albertus Parish Church, 416 Parkdale Avenue, beginning at 7.00 p.m. on Sunday, January 8th 2017 with continuing visitation until 10.00 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Basilica, 281 Nepean Street, Ottawa, at 10.00 a.m. on Monday, January 9th 2017, followed by a reception in the church basement. Burial at Notre-Dame Cemetery after the reception.
