Dear Claire,
This is Ligang Zheng, Louis' friend and colleague. Over the years, I have met you and Louis on the cross country ski trails in Gatineau Park almost every winter.
I was totally shocked and completely speechless when I got the news yesterday. It is so sad . Louis is a very closed friend of mine. I have known him since he joined CANMET. We share lots of common interests in classical music and cross country ski. We would often talk about our family together. He often would tell me about how his mother is doing and more. I miss him very much. He is very kind and generous to everybody.
Please take care of yourself and pass my deepest condolence to Louis' mother and the rest family. His love and friendship will be with us forever.
Ligang

Marlene and I are deeply saddened by Louis’ passing. He was always so happy to see a person and talk to them. He brought a wonderful personal touch to formal meetings that allowed people to relax and feel free to contribute....vraiment un gentilhomme. We will miss both of you at our ISO venues.

Dear Claire
Words can not describe how this tragic news was received by John and I, and we can only image the impact on yourself and Louis' family. I was always excited to catch up with you both during our times at the TC27 meetings. Louis joking and encouraging. You can only describe him as a beautiful man. A privilege to have called him a good friend. Our meetings will never be the same, but we have some wonderful memories. We wish we could be there to give you a big hug. Lots of Love

It is with great sadness that I heard of Louis' passing. Louis and I were fortunate to travel around the world meeting up on many business trips. In the last 4 years we met up in Ottawa, Hamilton, Brisbane, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and the latest trip was in Tokyo where I was fortunate to have breakfast with him and Claire every morning before our meetings would begin.
Thanks for being a colleague, mentor and a friend.
Rest in peace Louis and my heart goes out to Claire and everyone else who is in mourning for Louis.

Claire Paris and Louis's Extended Family
Claire and Family members, I am a colleague of Louis's from CanmetENERGY-Ottawa. I was devastated when I heard the tragic news that the world has lost Louis. I started working at the BCC in 1994 and Louis was one of the first people I met and worked with. He was so kind, friendly, always had a ready smile and was willing to provide guidance and feedback whenever required. He was one of the most organized, conscientious colleagues I have ever worked with. Although I have worked off-site for many years, Louis always greeted me with a huge smile and kind words when I would venture onto the complex. He will be truly missed by all that met and knew him. The world has lost a great researcher and an even greater person. Please accept my sincere condolences.

So saddened to hear of your loss. Louis was a such a kind, knowledgeable and helpful person. We crossed paths many times. While I was at Stelco as a young manager Louis welcomed me into Canmet and the Canadian Carbonization Research Association. Later in my career we again worked closely together on many projects while I was at Teck Coal, and have shared many great meals together over the years.
Louis always freely shared his great knowledge and was helpful to many people in our industry. His knowledge of coal, cokemaking and biochar will be greatly missed by many in Canada and around the world. His warm smile, laughter and kindness to all of us, will be missed more.
Sincere condolences,

Louis was a kind, friendly, fun, intelligent guy. He was a huge part of my research through the CCRA. I always relied on him for his opinion and input on our research. He was a valued colleague and mentor. Things won't be the same without him and I am so sad that this has happened. He was an extremely important part of the coal industry in Canada and he will dearly be missed by many. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dear Claire
Bronwyn and I were truly shocked to learn of Louis' passing, so sad. The world has certainly lost a great man and soul, who we all loved. His enthusiasm for whatever he did was infectious and he brightened up so many of our ( sometimes dull) meetings. Louis would always greet me enthusiastically and often give me a wink and cheeky grin during meetings, which was just priceless.
His contribution to coal science and Standards was exemplary and his input will be sadly missed.
Thank you for sharing Louis with us. We have all learnt something from him and his presence will be missed. His spirit however will live on in our future ISO meetings with the legacy he has left through his professional and diligent work.
Claire, we will also miss your bright face and smile at our ISO gatherings. We hope that you will be able to gather strength in time to be able to reflect on all the tributes to your wonderful man. We send you our love and deepest sympathy. You and Louis are in our thoughts.
Please pass on our condolences to the family and our heartfelt loss from all of his ISO friends and colleagues. Love and strength to you, Claire.

Dear Claire and Louis' family,
First of all, I offer my heartfelt condolences with the loss of Louis. I received the call Louis had passed away while hiking with Jason high up in the Rockies. Coincidentally, or actually not coincidentally at all, just a moment before, we had talked about Louis, the fine colleague, friend and researcher he was. Louis made an invaluable contribution to research in Canada. We saw him only recently, and most of all, we will miss his friendship, enthusiasm and warm humanity.
Wishing you strength,

Claire and Louis' family
Claire and all of Louis' family, I wanted to express my sincerest condolences to you all at this difficult time. I only worked with Louis for 10 years as part of Canadian Carbonization Research Association (CCRA) and can say that he was one of the very small core team who made the CCRA really run - like so many people in the different aspects of Louis' life, the CCRA team will all really miss Louis on both a personal and professional level. I will miss his warmth, humility, sincerity, professionalism, and friendship.

Suzanne and I wish you strength at this difficult time. Louis was not only passionate scientist but one of the warmest persons I’ve known. I always looked forward to hearing his soothing vice at the ASTM and ISO meetings. A palpable ripple spread over the entire coal community world-wide with the news of Louis’ passing.

Dear Claire
This is from Dave Osborne and Hazel
We are so sad to hear this news and not sure what to say, but I would like to share a poem I found when my dad left us and hope it will be seem appropriate,
Its called "He is just away" - by James Whitcomb Riley
You cannot say, you must not say
That he has died. He is just away.
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand
He has wandered into an unknown land
And left us dreaming, how very fair
It needs must be since he lingers there
So lets think of him faring on as dear
In the love of there as the love of here
Think of him still as the same and say
He has not died, he is just away,
We shall miss him very much too and I was so thrilled to have seen him in Toyko.
With our love
Dave and Hazel

Claire et la famille Giroux,
Quelle triste nouvelle, which we are still processing. Our condolences to all of you. We’ve known Louis since we moved next door to the family in 1972. To this day, we remain friends with his mom, a wonderful neighbour, and with his many siblings who visit.
Our memories of Lou are many throughout the years: of a studious young man - who enjoyed classical music; family gatherings – where we were often included; the day he received his Ph.D. – his parents were so proud; and when he met Claire – the love of his life! But we’re holding on to our last memory, when he and Claire last month tended to Therese’s gardens, a yearly occurrence. We shared with Louis and Claire our love of traveling.
We know that losing a close family member is always difficult, but we know you will find comfort in the memory of your happy times together with Louis. Our thoughts continue to be with Claire, Thérèse and brothers and sisters.

Dear Claire and Louis' family,

Dear Claire,
what a shock, what a loss.
I knew Louis for at least 20 years, and that is a pretty long time to get a good impression of a person. Louis was - beside his technical know-how and his efforts to get "good" standards - always someone who tried to achieve good results for his clients, but never overruling the interests of others; and never offending someone personally.
Beyond the work, there was a always friendly Louis that I loved to talk to and made excursions with during ISO meetings. Last time I met him and you was in Tokyo in a small bar where we had a glass of wine together. I will keep this scene im my memory.
Claire, I wish you stength to overcome this sad situation.
With best regards, Klaus
