It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lorne Arnold Achtell on April 19th, 2025, born on September 7, 1928.
Lorne lived a long full life deeply rooted in the place he called home at the Inlet. He was born on the property where he resided for nearly 97 years. It was his wish to die there as well, and he spent his last few weeks surrounded by loved ones, passing away peacefully on April 19, 2025. In all aspects, his life was a testament of stability, hard work and devotion.
He was predeceased by his parents, Otto and Anna and by his siblings, Martha, Gustav, Ruben, Clara, Ida, Rena, Freda and Venita. He was the husband of the late Dell (née Lyon), who was his beloved wife of 71 years.
He was the devoted father of the late Kirk (Sheila), Stephen (Mary Jean), Ernest (Sandra) and Christopher (Jennifer), the cherished grandfather of Adam, Ashley, Mitchell, James, Kate, Sarah, Ines and Malachai. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren Emily, Elizabeth, Vivianne, and a new little one expected in June.
With only an elementary education, he was a craftsman who was largely self-taught. With his natural intelligence and aptitude for problem solving, he built upon skills, learned from his father, refining them through years of hands-on experience. He became a respected carpenter and builder whose work was known and admired throughout the community. Everything he built, from cupboards, tables and blanket boxes to beautiful cottages, was a reflection of his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality. He shied away from the spotlight, but his legacy lives on in the things he made, as well as in the generations he mentored, having modeled diligence, patience and integrity. He led by example, showing that true pride in one's accomplishments doesn't lie in accolades, but in the humble satisfaction of a job well done.He will be deeply missed.

A Funeral Service will be held at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 643 Inlet Road, Mulgrave and Derry, Quebec on Monday, April 28th, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. followed by burial at the parish cemetery. Friends and family may pay their respects from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service. Reception to follow at the Hill and Gully Snowmobile Club, 149 Inlet Road.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lorne's memory to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church or to a charity of your choice, would be appreciated by the family.

Lorne built our beautiful cottages at Gull Lake, as well as those of family and friends. Each one was a unique and special home that has lasted since then. His work carries on through the work of Jimmy and Mitch who have inherited his craft and attention to quality work. Besides this, Lorne was such a pleasant and positive person to be with, welcoming and sincere. He will be dearly missed.

Rob and I are heartbroken that you have lost your Dad, father-in-law, and grandfather, a man you held so dear. Through our conversations with Lorne over the years we could see how his humility, work ethic, and sense of family were passed down to his son and grand daughters. We are far away as I type this and sad that we won't be back in time to attend services and give each of you a supportive hug. For now until we return we are with you in thought and prayer. May Lorne be up there dancing with his bride, safe in the arms of God. Love to all.

Our deepest condolences to the Achtell family on Lorne’s passing. Lorne made extensive renovations to our farmhouse before we acquired it, including adding a full basement to it. He would drop by regularly to admire his work - he was justifiably proud of it, evidenced by the initials he carved into the chinking he skillfully added to our log walls. He was always friendly and curious, and we welcomed his visits. Lucky for us, Lorne passed on many of his skills to Kirk and Chris, both of whom made additional high-quality improvements to our dwelling. Lorne will be missed by many.

I am deeply sadden to hear of Lorne's passing; his calm and sure presence in the Inlet has always seemed as permanent as the mountains themselves and will be deeply missed. Dad always spoke fondly of Lorne, and Lorne's opinions and insight were always first amongst those that Dad sought when taking a decision regarding the Council. As such, I can only imagine how much you all miss his presence now, but rest sure that you will meet again through Christ Jesus, our Lord.
