RICHARD MARTINEAU, Madeleine

1920 - 2022

Madeleine (Richard) Martineau

1920-2022

Born in Quebec City, the 10th of 11 children, daughter of Blanche Lemay and Wilbrod Richard, Madeleine passed away peacefully in Ottawa on the 19th of June 2022, shortly after her 102nd birthday.  Wife of the late Richard Martineau (1915-1988), dear mother of Josée (Bill Rourke), the late Louis, Tom (Diane Schmidt), Ann, Peter (Judith Schmid), grandmother of Michael Martineau (Olivia Chamberlain), Martin Rourke (Jessica Prior), Kevin Martineau and great-grandmother of David and Hudson Martineau, Madilyn and Ellie Rourke.  Madeleine had many friends and relatives of all ages.

Following her marriage to Richard, her wonderful life as a young woman in Quebec and Cap-Rouge expanded to Ottawa, Washington, Ottawa, London, Ottawa and Paris before settling in Ottawa.  She moved to Beacon Heights Residence in 2014.

She loved her life and made friends easily.  Her family was her priority in life, but once the children had grown, she took courses, had a love for art, worked in museums and took occasional trips to Europe.  Her dear Richard died too soon after his retirement and she graciously took on all the family responsibilities.  A loveable strong and vivacious woman with a love of life, she has left us for new adventures in the great unknown. Her secret to life: everything in moderation.  Her life: extraordinary. Adieu dear Madeleine.

We wish to thank the personnel of the Beacon Heights Residence for the excellent care provided to her.

Burial will be held at Beechwood Cemetery later this summer.

Chers petits-cousins,

The Martineau Family

I've known Mrs. Martineau since I was a child. I grew up with the Martineau family on Meadow Drive in Ottawa (now called Meadow Park Place). There were 33 kids on our little dead-end street of 11 houses (and a few more kids around the corner on Plum Tree) - those were the days! Mrs. Martineau's family was her pride and joy, and as my mother used to say of that generation of mothers, her family was her 'life's work'. A kind, elegant, down to earth, and a friendly lady to all who stopped by her front yard for a chat. I don't think they make them like that anymore! My very sincere condolences to the entire Martineau family.

The Martineau Family

Our sincerest condolences and sympathies on the passing of your mother. I remember her well from my days growing up across the street on Plum Tree. Another of the wonderful cast of mothers living on Meadow Drive and Plum Tree. But I also remember her when I returned to Plum Tree to raise our own family and she of course was still there, pleasant, friendly and neighbourly as ever. As time passed I marvelled at the strength and grace with which she carried herself as our children grew up and became a second generation of Sommerfelds that were lucky enough to get to know "Mrs. Martineau". Our thoughts are with you all at this time.
