1940 - 2023
Philip C. Norem passed away on December 24, 2023 at the age of 83.
He was predeceased by his parents, Laurence and Martha Norem, his first wife, Bettie, and their infant son, Thomas. Philip leaves behind his beloved wife, Barbara, after 35 years of marriage. He is survived by his brother Jim (wife Barbara) and sister Merry (late husband Jon). He will be missed by his step-daughters, Kathi Simpson and Naomi Simpson, and grandchildren, Graeme and Kaytee Mick, and Raine, Luca, and Nyela Simpson-Hall. He will be remembered by his nephews and nieces, Katie Norem, David Norem, Mike Stephens, Mike Bailey, Robert Bailey,and Yvonne Bailey-Jones.
Philip was born in Chicago on October 20, 1940. He obtained a BSc from University of Chicago and attended Princeton University on a National Science Foundation Fellowship. Phil immigrated to Canada in 1967 to take the position of Director of Engineering for Autotelic Industries in Fort Erie, Ontario.
Philip spend much of his life experimenting and researching and publishing papers in various fields. He got a Masters in Library Science at the State University of N.Y. in Buffalo in 1990.
He was also very interested in world affairs and privately wrote countless letters to leaders in many countries, such as U.S.A., Canada, Soviet Union, China, etc. In 2006 he was nominated by the Canadian government for the Nobel Peace Prize for his private letter writing campaign to promote peace and justice.
A memorial service for Philip will be held on Saturday, May 4 at 10:30 at Potter's Wheel Christian Fellowship, 1214 Chem. Antoine-Boucher,Gatineau, QC J9J 3M8
Interment of ashes will be at the Fruitland Cementary ln Hamilton, Ontario at a future date.
